Kibale Forest National Park holds the highest density and diversity of primates in Africa: 13 species share its 795 square kilometres of lowland and montane rainforest. This 3-day safari is built around a morning chimpanzee trek led by an expert primatologist. Setting off at dawn, you follow fresh nesting signs and distant pant-hoot calls until you locate a habituated community of roughly 80 individuals. Watch them crack palm nuts with makeshift tools, groom one another in sun-dappled clearings, and swing effortlessly through the mid-canopy — your hour with them passes in what feels like minutes. In the afternoon, a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary reveals red colobus and L'Hoest's monkeys, Great Blue Turacos, and papyrus-dwelling warblers. Evenings at a forest-edge lodge are accompanied by the chorus of tree frogs and the occasional distant chimp drum-display on buttress roots.
