Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits at the junction of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, its three dormant Virunga volcanoes rising above a dense bamboo forest. First, you trek the Nyakagezi gorilla group — the only habituated family in Mgahinga, famous for occasionally crossing international borders — through steep bamboo-clad slopes where golden monkeys also swing overhead. The following day, you lace up hiking boots for a summit push on Mt. Gahinga (3,474 m), climbing through Hagenia-Hypericum woodland into a crater swamp ringed by giant lobelia. The panorama from the rim stretches across all three countries and into the Rift Valley.
