Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas and roughly 5,000 golden monkeys survive in the wild, and both call the Virunga volcanic region home. This 5-day safari lets you trek both species on consecutive days. In Bwindi or Mgahinga, a ranger-led hike through dripping montane forest leads to a gorilla family — you'll hear the silverback's low rumble before you see him part the undergrowth. The next morning you enter a bamboo zone on the lower slopes of Mt. Sabyinyo to track golden monkeys: small, electric-orange primates that leap between bamboo stems at dizzying speed, their expressive faces framed by jet-black fur. Between treks, a Batwa community walk and a nature trail for Albertine Rift endemic birds fill the itinerary.
