Nyungwe is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa — a 970-square-kilometre canopy that has survived since the last Ice Age, sheltering 13 primate species, 300 bird species, and orchids still being catalogued by botanists. This 4-day luxury expedition opens with a dawn chimpanzee trek: trackers lead you along muddy trails until excited pant-hoots overhead signal a community of roughly 60 chimps moving through the upper canopy. The following day you cross the famous Canopy Walkway — a 200-metre suspension bridge strung 60 metres above the forest floor — with the crowns of mahogany and ebony trees stretching to the horizon. Between treks, the Cultural Heritage Corridor connects you to Rwanda's royal past at the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza, and a visit to Gisakura tea plantations shows how Rwanda's hills produce some of Africa's finest leaves.
